Gener8ion’s “Storm II feat. Yung Lean” hit the internet with the force of a hurricane when it dropped in April, breaching Yung Lean’s usually tight-knit fanbase and awing millions of viewers with its synchronised choreography. It’s a fitting introduction to the inter-disciplinary universe the French duo will unveil on their debut album, Love & Tears, releasing June 12, which combines music, cinematography, choreography and IRL exhibitions to offer a glimpse into their uncanny valley vision of the not-so-distant year 2034.

Composed of DJ-producer Surkin and filmmaker Romain Gavras, Gener8ion have long looked to the future in their genre-diffuse releases, from 2015’s MIA-featuring EP The New International Sound Pt. 2 to soundtracking dystopian images of unrest in 2022 feature film Athena (co-written by Gavras himself). These visions are set to be crystallised in a new exhibition launching alongside Love & Tears at London’s 180 Studios (if you squint, 180 is actually Gener8ion’s middle name).

Titled Visions of 2034, the exhibition comprises seven short films, all of which offer a glimpse into the year 2034 in different locations around the world: Leeds, Mumbai, Idaho, Athens, Hangzhou and LA. Each film is based around a track on the album, drawing featured artists Yung Lean, 070 Shake and Foals lead singer Yannis Philippakis into Gener8ion’s unhinged fictional universe, alongside hundreds of unique characters and dance compositions from award-winning French dancer and choreographer Damien Yalet.
