Former staffers of Republican Rep. Nancy Mace are voicing concern about her mental wellbeing, with one saying the "best thing for her is to no longer be in the media all the time, and to enjoy private life outside of electoral politics."

That and other statements are part of a sprawling piece published by New York Magazine on Monday. Others said they believe her career is practically over, and that she has torched her relations with most allies, including President Donald Trump.

"Something's broken. The motherboard's fried. We're short-circuiting somewhere," a staffer said. She noted that when she joined Mace she seemed like a breath of fresh air for politics, but "after six months I was like, 'Man, this is one of the worst people I've ever met."

Mace reacted to the piece before it was published. "I have enemies? Good. Get in line. It means I've stood for something. As NY Mag publishes the next hit piece on me, I have four words: I'm not going anywhere," she said in a social media publication.

However, the piece includes several other anecdotes detailing controversial episodes, including requests for liquor after midnight to continue parties at her home. "Look, when I worked for her, our poor scheduler was getting calls at two o'clock in the morning to come bring her bottles of tequila," one former staffers said.

Others were told to do housework, including cleaning multiple properties she rented out on Airbnb. And some had to create burner accounts online to defend her on social media. In one case, the report noted, she instructed a staffer to go on Reddit forums about the "hottest women in Congress" to boost her standing.

"She would make staffers cry. She would threaten to fire them, take their money away, not give them raises, not to give them days off, religious days," one former aide said. "The closer you get to her, the harder she messes up your brain," another noted. "It's a classic story of 'never meet your heroes.'"

Outside her office, her standing with Trump deteriorated after she refused to back down on a vote related to the release of Jeffrey Epstein files. This has ended any chance of a presidential endorsement, leaving her vulnerable in an increasingly difficult South Carolina gubernatorial primary, the outlet noted.

Republican operatives in South Carolina increasingly doubt that Mace will perform strongly even in her own Low Country base when the primary is held on June 9. Several believe she may not finish first in her home district, a sign of how far her support has slipped.
